Rain, wind, snow, privacy, aesthetics — an awning has no answer to most questions.

Awning: sun only

Protects from the sun—as long as it’s not windy. In wind, it retracts. In rain: get inside quickly.

Awning: horizontal only

Only one direction. If the sun comes from the front or at a low angle, the awning only helps to a limited extent.

Awning: does not replace a room

It remains a sunshade. The terrace won’t become a second outdoor living space with it — only a pergola with a louvered roof can do that.

Yes, a high-quality articulated-arm awning starts at around CHF 3,000, and a SkyPergola at around CHF 15,000. But: The awning does not replace the function of the pergola. Together, they would cost more than the pergola alone.

Doesn’t make much sense. The pergola can do what the awning can — and much more. The awning would sit under the pergola and would be unnecessary.

Shade sails are even more limited than awnings: no rain protection, complex installation, susceptible to wind. Not an option for permanent patio use.

If you only sit outside in July/August, never when the sky is overcast or it’s windy, and you don’t plan any extension. For the other 10 months, it won’t be of any help.
